Life Drawing!

Hey guys, I've just uploaded some examples of my life drawing from this years' sessions. @flickr These are just a few of my favorites... hadn't had time to photograph all of the good ones. Or I got bored while photographing.. ;D

new scholarship shots!

I owe a big thank you to Rakesh, for helping me with some post effects on the car shot.
I've tweaked certain things about the shot to my liking, and then have tried applying similar effects to another frame of a different shot of the ferris wheel.

Wireframes!

as requested:

by the way thanks matt, thanks daniel for your comments!
@ nate: no those are definitely not caustics in the headlight; would've taken much longer to render. I'm not using any FG or GI, the hotspots are faked with spotlights that emit only specular light.

beginnings of another side project;

I want to do a shot involving two cars, but i don't yet want to model another car completely, so I tweaked the existing model. New ground effects kit, c110 skyline taillamp conversion, rear windshield slats, and a different color. There were initially new wheels too, but i decided that i didn't like the look of them, so i used the same old wheels.

started as a speed modelling exercise, I've been thinking about treating it like a lighting exercise as well. Could possibly show up in the background of some future car renders... maybe...

anyway.. just keepin' you all updated on what I've been doing this term.

280z beach render side project from patrick vidal on Vimeo.

this is the same car model (280z) I've been working on, but rendered in a different environment. It was just a quick "something-to-do-while-rendering" project.. but I may decide to continue working on this. Anyway I'd love to hear what you think!

start to term six

with the last term upon us, it's absolutely crunch time; I'm actually very excited! I'll be pushing myself twice as hard to meet certain deadlines I've set for myself. I'm hoping to have all four shots rendered by the end of the second week. I will try to update this blog on a daily basis here on out. Keep an eye on this blog; there is alot on the way!

for now, I'll leave you with this special treat, a few images from my growing collection of reference photos:

Term 5 week 8 video update!

VFS Patrick Vidal Term 5 Week 8 Presentation from patrick vidal on Vimeo.
sorry for that short lapse in updates; i locked my cameras early week 7, and since then I've been working away at the lighting & shading of each shot starting with shots one and two. I'm incredibly excited to get started finishing & detailing shots three and four! So far, the entire environment (shots 1-4) is base-shaded (no dirtmaps) and base-lit (nothing fancy). It took me three days to finish detailing (prop modeling, lighting & shading) shot one. I've put in two days of work lighting and shading shot two. I'm still feeling very confident that I'll have near-final quality renders by the end of term 6 week 1.

A note about my credits; I want to show additional details that i wasn't able to show in my first four shots (car interiors mostly..) while the credits roll at screen right. The shot in the current credits is an old render (from term 4 I think).
...and another note about the car animation:
it's only been blocked in. I started to animate in term 5 week 6, but I had to put that on hold as i had to lock cameras and then finish shots one and two. I'm planning to have animated the car by the end of week two of term six.

Anyway, feel free to rip it apart; I'm still very open to comments and critiques!

By the way I owe a huge thank you to everyone that helped me lock cameras in Term 5 weeks 5-7. Also a very very big thank you to everyone who's been ripping my work apart pointing out all the mistakes and what i can improve upon.

term 5 week7 animatic V6

new video update!
though it's still loading up on vimeo, so i can only give you the link, it should be viewable in the next hour or so...

"sorry for the short lapse in updates, but it's just been so busy!
anyway, I'm so very close to really locking these cameras, just a few tweaks here and there about longer holds, and timing, but for now, i think the camera moves are pretty solid.

comments & critiques? :)"

term 5 week 6 video update (animatic V3)

VFS Patrick Vidal Term 5 Week 6 animatic 3 from patrick vidal on Vimeo.

just another update of my work from this past week; still trying to lock my cameras. I've added in a few moving holds to showcase details of the environment. Also, the transitions between shots 4, 5, and 6 have been improved (i think). But please let me know what needs work!

thanks!

term 5 week 6 video update

VFS Patrick Vidal Term 5 Week 6 Progress Reel from patrick vidal on Vimeo.

I've just uploaded a video with my new shots. Looking at it now, i realize my shot 03 is much too fast. I'm happy with the other shots though (01, 02, 04).
I gotta figure something out for shot 03... hmm....

by the way, keep in mind that the animation is only roughly blocked in, so the reason the car jumps up is a curb check that i hadn't animated in yet... =D

term 5 week 6 update

just want to let you guys in on how my project is going; alot has happened since the term 5 midterms.
I've started rigging and animating the car, as well as animating new cameras. The new cameras require me to texture and light the entire scene, which is going alright, but its slow go.. so far i've applied most of the base shaders, dirt maps come later. I've uploaded a frame from my new 'shot_03' camera:

term 5 midterms!

finally another update, sorry it's taken me so long though!
i hadn't really had time to sit back and do much else other than work on the project.

so far, i've cut down the amount of work per shot, as i've been hesitant about the amount of time we've got to finish our projects.

We had our term 5 midterm presentations recently, and this is basically what i presented. The shots have changed since the last video because I've been hesitant about the amount of work i have to finish by the end of the year, so i've been cutting down to a more manageable project.

any comments and critiques are always welcome and appreciated!

(also, hd720 stills are on the way... once i get them copied from the school pc's)
